My MIMA Summit Experience: From Audience Member to Presenter

Over the years I have attended many conferences spanning a variety marketing of topics, including the MIMA Summit.  At each of these events, my role was quite simple: MIMA Summit 2010 Speaking Badgeattend the most relevant presentations to my area of interest, take copious notes, and apply the learned tactics and techniques in my day to day work.  If our team feels ambitious enough, we will even post the notes on our blog and share reactions for the world to see (like our Google Analytics Summit and Online Marketing Summit notes from 2009).

This year’s MIMA Summit was different, because this would be my first time presenting at the conference.  While I had blogged earlier this year about my goal to be a presenter at a marketing conference, I never imagined that it would actually happen.  That is, until I met Betsey from Sugarbeet Creative and she gave me the opportunity to have my voice heard!

Top 8 Reasons Why Your Intern Should Attend the MIMA Summit

I had the great opportunity of attending this year’s MIMA Summit as both a student and a volunteer. While this was my second year attending, it was certainly a very different experience than last year, namely because I was also representing Three Deep.

I think all interns and student employees of an interactive agency should have a chance to attend events such as the MIMA Summit. While I have numerous reasons for why your intern should attend, I’ve gathered my Top 8 reasons.

1. Expect Notes

I’m not referring to the notes that are passed in middle school that are similar to the “Do you like Jimmy? Circle: Yes, No, Maybe”. If you tell your intern that you’d like them to share what they learned at the conference, chances are you’ll get more than you bargained for. Students are meticulous at taking notes, and will try to report as much information as their brains are able to handle.

Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media Integration

On September 10, 2010, I gave a speech to an organization called MENG.  For those of you who are not familiar, MENG is a national organization of marketing executives.  There are some pretty heavy hitters in the organization, so I was honored to be invited by the New Jersey chapter to speak to members.  I was also a little nervous, because I would be talking about social media for the first time!

While I use social media every day in both my work and personal life, rarely does the opportunity arise for me to position myself as an expert on the subject.  In fact, I wouldn’t call myself an expert at all.  Knowledgeable is probably more accurate.

Google Instant Search – My Instant Reaction

Google Instant SearchI write this while traveling to the east coast to meet with some great clients. During my travels and on-site meetings, the news of Google Instant flooded my Inbox, twitter stream, Google Reader and just about every medium in between.

In between meetings, I was asked to weigh in on the topic by co-workers, peers and clients.  Since my response has been the same throughout, I thought it might be worthwhile to share my thoughts (and the general sentiments of Three Deep as well) in this space.

Disability Compliance: Target Got Sued for over $3 Million, Don’t be Next

The case of the National Federation of the Blind v. Target should send a bone-chilling shiver down the back of an e-commerce website owner. Jeffery Bashaw’s (University of Washington School of Law, Class of 2008) legal abstract makes the message clear:

Get your website in line with the American Disabilities Act or get a lawyer…. A good one.

The case ended with Target Corporation paying out over $3 million with an additional 6 million dollars in a settlement fund to further compensate because their Target.com site was not easy to use by the blind. Not being accessible to the blind is a clear violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. And yes, websites are governed by this law.
