MnSEM Search Party II – February 10th at Three Deep’s Offices

Three Deep is very excited to announce that we will be hosting the second event for the MN SEM, an organization dedicated to the Minnesota Search Marketing Community.  The event will on February 10th, 2011.  Join us as the MnSEM Search Party II heads over to Lowertown St. Paul.

Ever since MN SEM launched in late 2010, we have been doing our best to support the organization and bring awareness to their events.  For the February 10th event, we decided to take it even further and offer up our humble abode as a gathering place for Minnesota Search Marketing professionals.  We are looking forward to hosting Lisa, James, Clint and the members of MNSEM!

If you’ve heard a lot of 2011 predictions for the future of search and trends to follow, you’re not alone. For February, we turn to local search experts in Minnesota for their opinion on these predictions. What can our industry expect to see this year? What can you do to ensure your business is staying on top of the trends?

Three Deep is Google’s Favorite Place

Favorite Place on GoogleWe are Google’s favorite place! You read it correctly!  After years of hoping, prodding, sweat and tears, I can finally announce to that Three Deep Marketing is Google’s favorite place in the United States, and presumably the world.

I would like to thank my family, friends, acquaintances, complete strangers and people who I might meet in the future; we couldn’t have done it without you!

In the mail today, Three Deep received a package from Google containing a large window sticker with a bar code, like the image shown to the right.  I have been anticipating this package for the past 10 days; ever since reading this announcement from Google.  I knew it was only a matter of time before Google would send us an affirmation of how much they truly like our organization.

What does it take to be Google’s favorite place?  A strong presence for your local business listing.  Those fortunate enough to receive this designation and a package in the mail (about 100,000 exclusive businesses)  have worked hard to optimize their local business listing on Google so that they often show up in local business oriented search results.

Why Most Local Search Resellers Fail Their SMB Clients

Author’s note: I started writing this article in reaction to a recent study published, and I ended up writing so much that I needed to break it into two posts!  You are currently viewing part 1, and part 2 will be released first thing Monday morning.

The other day, a report came out from Borrell and Associates saying that most small businesses (SMB) that try local online search advertising almost universally give it up after 6 months.  More specifically:

  • 50% give up within the first 90 days

SEO For Small Business Q&A – Where to Start?

Got a SEO question from my cousin Paul last week that I feel represents a fairly common question coming from SMB owners about how to get their site found on Google.  Republishing the question and response (with identifying details removed), since this is sound SEO techniques that apply to just about any small business owner in any niche who is trying to increase their exposure within their locality.

Question:

Hi Jeff,

I have a business partner that set up a website and he is unclear how to get more ” meta tags ” for his site.

AdWords on Your Mobile Phone (Google’s G1/Android and the iPhone)

In addition to reverse-engineering Google’s Local Search algorithm, we Three Deepers are always looking for more venues for expanding our reach for our local business clients, especially with Adwords.  I have been particularly intrigued of late by Google’s iPhone search application and how it pertains to local search.

If you haven’t read about it yet, the basic premise is that you open the iPhone app, hold it up to your mouth and say your search term.  Google recognizes what you say and automatically ties what you say to your geographic location (using either triangulation or GPS) and then returns search results based on where you are located.

While evaluating this application, I noticed that there were no advertisements on the search app results, or the Google search results on my phone.  Not having ads on the results pages was great for advertisers with strong organic search rankings (and especially those who had top 3 listing in the onebox), but it was a negative for PPC advertisers who wanted to push their way up to the top of the results.  I knew it was only a matter of time before Google would start allowing advertisers to place AdWords ads on these results pages (remember, it’s AdWords revenue that made the iPhone app FREE to users in the first place).
